In 1997 Michael Hemmws left the group Snack after completing
his mission in Armenia and returned to U.S. The group Snack
invited a new drummer from another Vanadzor-based
group "AlQ".
The band also changed its name to LAV ELI. They went on with
playing shows and played in Yerevan Small Philharmonic Hall,
ECAC (Experimental Contemporary Art Center) participating
in a set of festivals and in an event called Cultural Spring.
In 1997 the band received a grant with assistance of Peace
Corps and started recording the album called The First LAV
Album. Several radio-stations (RadioBurg, Hai FM) included
songs from the album in their play-lists, from which The First
LAV Song hit number one in top 20 charts and stayed there
for a few months.
Two of LAV ELI's best friends took part in the recording,
Arthur Queenan (harp) and John Perfitt (mandolin), representing
their own songs in the album (Fine Line and Elaborate Plans
respectively, see below). In 1998 LAV ELI participated in
Armenian Song Festival competition with Garun e Yekel (Spring
has Come) and was the 15th in more than 300 participants (although
I think we were better). With help of former program director
of Radioburg FM Artyom Ayvazyan the band recorded a CD named
Essays, in 1999.
The first song in the album Skizb (The Beginning) stays in
top 20 charts of Hai FM for more than 4 months reaching number
2. After recording the album Alex Avetisyan left the group.
Vahe Terteryan was invited to replace him. Vahe again was
from above-mention band AlQ.
With new bassist LAV ELI played in Tsaghkadzor, as well as
in Vanadzor together
with Angels, a rock band from Yerevan.
